Recognising the change makers Finalists of the Tasmanian Volunteering Awards 2023 announced

The finalists for the eighth annual Tasmanian Volunteering Awards have been announced, with 27 Tasmanians recognised for their game-changing contribution to the community.

Organised by Volunteering Tasmania, the state-wide awards program offers an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the stories of the individuals, groups and organisations who contribute to creating stronger, healthier, and more resilient communities.

The winner of each of the 10 categories will be named at a ceremony to be held at Government House Tasmania during National Volunteer Week (15 – 21 May).

Volunteering Tasmania CEO Shirleyann Varney said volunteers play a vital role in bringing about positive change, to the lives of all in Tasmania with the National Volunteer Week 2023 theme of ‘Change Makers’ a fitting recognition of this.

“Volunteers are not just passive participants, they are active agents of change who use their passion, creativity, and expertise to make a real difference,” Ms Varney said.

“Whether it’s working to address social inequalities, protecting the environment, encouraging healthy lifestyle or supporting vulnerable groups, volunteers are at the forefront of creating a better and inclusive world for all of us.”

Finalists include a seasoned mariner, several sports administrators, a firefighter of 45 years, surfers, and those with a passion for protecting animals. A few of the finalises donate their time and expertise to Tasmania’s migrant community, while others focus on young people, teaching them life skills and ensuring their basic needs are met. A number of the finalists are involved with community gardens, and others contribute by creating and coordinating meaningful roles for volunteers as part of their paid employment.

Ms Varney said the ‘Change Makers’ theme also acknowledges the transformative power of volunteering, and how it can enrich volunteers’ lives.

“Through their volunteering individuals can develop new skills, expand their networks, and gain valuable experiences that can help them personally and professionally.

“Ultimately, volunteers are change makers because they inspire others to get involved, create a ripple effect of positive change, and contribute to building a more vibrant, inclusive, and resilient society for all,” Ms Varney said.
