ADVOCATES WRITE TO PREMIER SEEKING TIMETABLE FOR CONVERSION BAN

Equality Tasmania has written to Tasmanian Premier, Jeremy Rockliff, seeking a commitment to a timetable for banning conversion practices.

Today marks exactly twelve months since the Tasmanian Law Reform Institute issued a report which found conversion practices still occur in Tasmania, cause deep harm and should be banned.

Mr Rockliff subsequently gave a commitment to implementing the TLRI’s recommendations.

Equality Tasmania President, Rodney Croome, said,

“Over the past twelve months conversion practices have continue to be inflicted in Tasmania causing deep, sometimes lifelong harm.”

“We have written to the Premier asking him to commit to a timetable for the introduction of legislation.”

Today is the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, Bi-phobia and Intersexism (IDAHOBIT).

Mr Croome said,

“IDAHOBIT Day is a time for everyone of good will to commit to ending discrimination against LGBTIQA+ people.”

“For the Tasmanian Government that means implementing its commitment to end conversion practices without delay.”
