Tasmanians Voice Ongoing Support for the State Government
The latest EMRS August poll is the second since Jeremy Rockliff succeeded Peter Gutwein as Premier in April 2022 and confirms the smoothness of the transition. The results reveal that support for the Liberal State Government in Tasmania has remained virtually unchanged in the course of the past five months.
After excluding undecided voters, support for the Government stands at 41 per cent in August 2022, up marginally by 2 percentage points from 39 per cent recorded in June 2022. Labor support currently stands at 31 per cent, up by just 1 point from 30 per cent in August.
Thus, the Government has continued to maintain a distinct lead over the Labor opposition. The latest poll of 1,000 Tasmanian adults was conducted from the 8th to the 11th of August 2022.
Paul Jamrozik (EMRS’ Managing Director) said, “These latest results are encouraging for the Liberal Government and for Jeremy Rockliff, particularly at a time when economic pressures on households and businesses are increasingly being felt. Although down from the 49 per cent recorded at the last state election and through to December 2021, at 41 per cent currently, Tasmanians have remained steadfast in their support for the Liberal Government over Labor by a significant 10 percentage points.”
Decided voter support for The Greens has not shifted, standing at 13 per cent currently, as in the June poll. Support for an independent or other minor party showed a marginal fall of 3 points since June to 15 per cent currently: this total was comprised overwhelmingly of those supporting an independent (14 per cent). The proportion of voters nominating Jeremy Rockliff as their preferred Premier in the latest August poll stood at 47 per cent, unchanged since June.
“This 47 per cent figure represents a 12 point lead over that recorded for Rebecca White, who saw only a marginal 1 point rise as preferred Premier since June to 35 per cent currently. We see here further confirmation of the steadiness of the support for the Government and its leadership” said Mr Jamrozik.
“EMRS suggests, however, that there is no room for complacency. The parties, leaders and candidates on all sides of the political spectrum will need to be alert to potential economic downturns for Tasmanians that may be reflected in changing voter support levels over the coming months.”
