Media release – Tasmanian Electoral Commission, 29 April 2022

Polling day for Tasmanian Legislative Council elections is next Saturday 7 May

Due to the high profile of the Federal Election, the Tasmanian Electoral Commissioner, Andrew Hawkey, is concerned some of the 80,000 electors required to vote next Saturday may not have realised they need to vote at TWO separate elections this May.

All electors enrolled in the divisions of Elwick, Huon and McIntyre on Monday 28 March have a chance to vote for their voice in the Tasmanian Legislative Council. Polling places will be listed in the Examiner and Mercury on polling day.

Electors who can’t get to a polling place on Saturday 7 May, will be required to vote early.

Need to vote early? 8 pre-poll centres opening across the state

To date, over 25,000 Legislative Council postal vote packs have been packed and posted to electors for these elections. It’s now too late to apply to vote by post.

Electors unable to make it to a polling place on polling day can still vote early next week at any of the following early voting centres until 6pm Friday 6 May.

Moonah: 29 Charles St (old Coogans store)
Huntingfield: Kingborough Family Church, 11 Glory Place
Launceston: 58 Charles Street
Deloraine: Deloraine Community Complex, 8 Alveston Drive
Longford: Longford War Memorial Hall, 55 Wellington Street
St Helens: Portland Memorial Hall, 39 Cecilia Street
Huonville: Town Hall, 40 Main Street
Scottsdale: St Barnabas’ Church Hall, 55 King Street

With the coming changes to COVID close contact isolation rules, if you become a close contact but have no symptoms, you can vote in person at an early voting centre or at a polling place on polling day. However you must have had a negative RAT and be wearing a mask when attending the polling place.

The TEC will continue to follow Health Department guidelines to provide safe polling places on polling day.
