Commemorating the Nakba (Catastrophe)
On 15 May 1948, the beginnings of the state of Israel resulted in more than 700,000 Palestinians being forcibly removed from their homes and lands to become internally displaced or refugees in neighbouring countries. Palestinians call this the Nakba – or the catastrophe. In 1967, an additional 300,000 Palestinians became refugees, some for the second time.
Palestinians remaining in what became Israel, now live largely as ‘second class’ citizens with 65 basic laws discriminating against them.
In Tasmania the ongoing tragedy of Palestine will be marked with three events:
On Sunday 15 May, the day that marks the Nakba internationally, Friends of Palestine Tasmania will, as usual, hold a reflective vigil. We will meet on Parliament House Lawns between 11:30 and 12:15.
In Launceston, Friends of Palestine Tasmania colleagues plan to hold a similar event – get in touch if you would like more information.
On Thursday 12 May, ‘Colonising Palestine: a Palestinian Perspective’ will be held at Hobart Town Hall, 17.30 – 19.30, sponsored by Australians for Palestine, Melbourne. Dr Adel Yousif will speak about the living conditions of Palestinians in the state of Israel, Gaza and the occupied West Bank, and a panel comprising Greg Barns, Randa Al-Hasan and Andrew Wilkie will discuss the issues.

I support Palestine – bumper stickers
APAN (our peak body, Australian Palestine Advocacy Network) has produced bumper stickers – I support Palestine and I vote. Let us know if you would like some.
APAN also has useful information about how you can let political candidates know that Palestine is an important issue, we encourage you to check their website.
