An update from the Tasmanian Theatre Company staff and Board

From Maeve and Oliver

Dear Friends, Supporters, Stakeholders, Artists and Community,

As you are likely already aware, the Tasmanian Theatre Company was unsuccessful in its application for organisational funds from Arts Tasmania for 2022. Since this announcement was made, we have served the board and the Mission of the Company to the extent of our capacity in investigating a variety of options for the Company’s future. Due to the Company’s lack of resources we are now accepting redundancies and leaving the direction of the Company in the hands of chair, Graeme Bradfield, and the Board. Furthermore, we have closed our office in the Salamanca Arts Centre.

We’d like to take this opportunity to acknowledge everyone who has been involved in the company since its inception in 1976, and particularly those of you who have supported TTC in the last two turbulent years. We are eternally grateful for your significant investment in the Company and belief in both it and us.

In 2022, despite an extremely challenging two years for the sector, we look around and see amazing people doing incredible work. We are proud to have created and facilitated much of that work alongside you. Work that helps us understand ourselves, and recognise our unique place in the world. While the future of TTC is unknown, we look forward to continuing to work with you to tell stories through other avenues.

Our board have penned the following letter to share with you all, and we hope you will welcome them as the new operational authority for the Company.

All our love and camaraderie,

Maeve and Oliver

From the Board

Dear theatre supporter.

As we all know the last couple of years have been quite unpredictable and difficult in virtually all social endeavours. Especially whenever large gatherings of people have been concerned.

Coupled with the fact the Company was not successful in receiving any public/Government funding then it became impossible to plan a proper program for 2022 during last year.

The December open Tasmania borders on the 15th had anything but the intended consequences and people have tended to stay home as much if not more than before.

The Board made a considered decision that the best course in the current environment was to basically save our cash reserves until the social /economic & health was more certain. The alternative was to continue with no certainty except spending cash reserves and suggesting programs with no solid likelihood of fruition let alone attendees / public.

We also have Company director responsibilities not to dissipate assets or funds where there is no real prospect of fulfilling the Company’s aims.

Hence we decided that the most prudent course was to tread water during 2022 whilst looking for opportunities and certainty with a view to re-examining the environment later this year.

We intend to look at a new program and update you as to our situation and findings as the year progresses on a quarterly basis.

We thank Maeve and Oliver for their work and help in such trying times.

Please don’t hesitate to email us with any queries or concerns you may have as well as any positive ideas.
