Mersey patient transmission investigated

The Tasmanian Health Service is assessing a situation at the Mersey Community Hospital where a patient is suspected of having contracted COVID-19 while admitted to a medical ward.

Another patient in the same room has also tested positive. A third patient is undergoing testing, while a fourth patient who had been in the room and subsequently discharged has been contacted and advised to isolate and get tested.

Five other patients who have subsequently been discharged have been identified as possible close contacts. They are all being contacted to ensure they are aware of the situation and of the need to monitor themselves for any symptoms.  Rapid Antigen Tests are being delivered to these patients so that testing can occur.

Both positive patients have been transferred to the North West Regional Hospital under relevant management protocols.

No new patients are being admitted to the ward. Patients currently in the ward will be tested as a precaution.

Contact tracing has not identified any staff who would qualify as close contacts. Appropriate PPE has been worn by staff at all times. Staff working in the area will be tested as a precaution.

The ward has been closed to all visitors while the situation is assessed. Visitor logs for the past few days are being reviewed.

While this suspected transmission is being managed under the THS North West Outbreak Management Protocol, it is important to note that this is not currently considered to be an outbreak.

Further information will be provided when available with contact tracing and testing well underway.
