Last year’s Walk4BrainCancer Tasmania had to be cancelled due to COVID restrictions. Participants were encouraged to register for the nation-wide ‘Walk4BrainCancer Virtual’ in which they walked their own chosen distance in their own time.
This year’s event will take the form of a 2km walk along the banks of North West Bay. This is a suitable walk for the whole family, with the mostly level track suitable for prams.
At the beginning of the walk a short memorial service will be held.
Depending on the weather, paper cranes will be hung from a tree in memory of friends and loved ones who have died of brain cancer. Origami paper and instructions will be available if you would like to make a memorial crane and write a message on it.
A limited quantity of ready-made cranes will be provided for those who have difficulty making their own.
There will be a raffle and food available.
“I have been diagnosed with brain tumours twice. My first diagnosis was in 2008. Thankfully, the two tumours were successfully operated on and removed. In December last year I was diagnosed with another brain tumour. Although this tumour is presenting as benign and non-life-threatening, it still causes health problems that impact my quality of life.
Once again, I have experienced the fear and uncertainty that comes with a brain tumour diagnosis. It’s often misunderstood by the general public that so-called ‘benign’ tumours can still have serious health and life consequences and will sometimes develop into malignant (‘cancerous’) tumours.
Since my first diagnosis, I have worked to do what I can to raise awareness of the tragic impact of brain tumours and brain cancer, to improve brain cancer survival rates and to work with other advocates and organisations in fighting for a cure.
Organising Walk4BrainCancer Tasmania is just one of the many ways in which I have supported this cause. Walk4BrainCancer Tasmania events have so far raised $175,000 for Cure Brain Cancer Foundation. By registering for this 7th Walk4BrainCancer Tasmania or sponsoring a participant, you can help combat a disease that kills more young Australians than any other cancer and more Australian children than any other disease. ” – Senator Catryna Bilyk
