Lord Mayor to address COP26 online forum tonight
Hobart Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds will take the world stage tonight when virtually attending a forum as part of the COP26 program.
Entitled Further and Faster – local climate action and the role of the Global Covenant of Mayors, the forum will discuss the role of local government in driving a green recovery in cities around the world to tackle climate change. It will also explore how national and local governments can identify effective ways for the integration of climate action plans at a city and local government level.
“It’s fantastic to see Hobart being recognised at an international level in the battle against climate change,” Cr Reynolds said. “We are a small capital city that is achieving big things in this space.”
Cr Reynolds will be among eight international speakers, including the respective Mayors of Heidelberg in Germany and Baguio in the Philippines, and the Director of Sustainable Development in City of Merida, Mexico.
The forum will be presented by the Global Covenant of Mayors (GCoM), an alliance of local governments across the globe. Currently featuring 11,000 signatories, the alliance seeks to secure a low-emission and climate resilient future.
“Tackling climate change isn’t something that falls on any one level of government,” said Cr Reynolds. “In fact, we’ve seen and heard in the lead up to COP26 about how it’s an all-round effort that requires involvement from everyone, both government and the private sector, as well as individuals doing their part.”
The forum will be part of a packed agenda at the COP26 Multilevel Action Pavilion, a complementary agenda to proceedings that seeks to make national discussions and decisions relevant at a local level.
The forum will be available to watch online, along with other events at the Multilevel Action Pavilion by registering at https://www.cities-and-regions.org/register/. The forum will commence at 9pm ADST on Thursday 11 November.
