Dean Winter MP, Shadow Minister for Economic Development, 19 August 2021

Workforce struggles starting to show

Premier Peter Gutwein needs to implement a real support plan to help struggling Tasmanian workers and businesses.

Shadow Minister for Economic Development Dean Winter said the Business Support Package was not enough.

“The $20 million Business Support Package is a joke, it won’t go close to providing the support needed for struggling Tasmanian workers and businesses,” Mr Winter said.

“We need a plan, and while Premier Peter Gutwein can read the ABS data from July all he likes, the fact is we are here in August and businesses and workers are really starting to struggle.

“With lockdowns causing increasing uncertainty, the government will need to detail contingency plans for the next few weeks and months should COVID forced the extension of lockdowns.”

Mr Winter said ABS data released today showed Tasmania’s wages remain well below the national average.

“Wages in Tasmania are $11,000 below the national average, this is despite the state’s cost of living now being ahead of most of the mainland, including major metro areas.”

Winter should immediately apologise

Supporting businesses during a global pandemic is not a joke.

Member for Franklin Dean Winter needs to immediately apologise and withdraw his blatant politicisation of the pandemic.

The Tasmanian Liberal Government makes no apology for continuing to keep Tasmanians safe and backing businesses with significant support packages.
