Background

Orfeevi Ritmi is a Canberra duo consisting of singer Dessi Gancheva and accordionist Alister Price. They perform Bulgarian folk songs, characterised by wild rhythms, exotic melodies and bold singing, blending ancient traditions with modern musical idioms.

Alister has studied accordion in Bulgaria, and has performed around Australia with numerous ensembles playing Balkan, Greek and Turkish music. He currently performs with Super Rats, an award-winning Romanian lautari band, Xenos, a Balkan band performing Roma (Gypsy) music, and Orfeevi Ritmi. He has previously performed in authentic Serbian, Turkish and Greek ensembles, collaborating with musicians who are from the region.

Dessi was born in Bulgaria and grew up singing and dancing for her Bulgarian club in Adelaide. As well as singing for Orfeevi Ritmi, she is also a performer in Dancers Without Borders, a Canberra ensemble of experienced Bulgarian, Serbian and Macedonian dancers.

They will be joined by Dave McNamara on drums.

At the workshop, Orfeevi Ritmi will be teaching Bulgarian dances in a variety of meters, with live music. The workshop will accommodate beginner and experienced dancers. The focus will be on Bulgarian dances, and this will complement the more Roma orientated dances at the Xenos dance.

Dessi will sing with Xenos at the evening dance.
