Winter Light was conceived by producer Lucien Simons, the new Coordinator for Performing Arts at Salamanca Arts Centre. With a quick turnaround, the festival has been pulled together in record time from May this year.
With an extensive line up of talented Tasmanian artists, the Winter Light program hopes to offer something for everyone. From contemporary Japanese dance to traditional Indian dance, to interactive light installations and Tasmanian favourites, Monique Brumby and Jed Appleton.
Lucien Simons reflected on Winter Light: “This festival provides a space for the community to celebrate the end of winter and the coming of spring, a season of death and a season of birth. It is a space where we can acknowledge the fluid nature of life and death and embrace the coming light.”
“Salamanca Arts Centre is an inclusive space, a creative hub for all members of the community and Winter Light is a program that reflects this.
“I was drawn to the concept of Winter Light because I thought, if we are to establish a new event in Hobart’s calendar then I’d like it to be one that can reach out to other cultures and communities over time.
“This year we are bringing in members of the Japanese community to share their culture and tradition through sharing elements of the Buddhist Obon Festival.”
Winter Light runs from 22 July – 15 August 2021.
