New Labor Shadow Cabinet reflects diversity and commitment to key issues for Tasmanians

Labor Leader David O’Byrne has revealed the Parliamentary Labor Party’s new Shadow Ministry reflecting the diverse talents of MPs and a commitment to the issues which are key to all Tasmanians going forward.

Mr O’Byrne said the Shadow Cabinet reflected Labor’s commitment to holding the Gutwein Government to account in crucial areas of concern for Tasmanians including health and housing, education and the state’s continuing economic development and the critical delivery of infrastructure.

“Tasmanians languishing on the biggest elective surgery waiting lists in history, Tasmanians stuck on unprecedented housing wait lists know that these important areas are not priorities for the Liberals and my new Shadow Cabinet will be fighting for a fair go and holding the government to account,” Mr O’Byrne said.

“Tasmanians stuck in the extraordinary daily traffic crush know that this is because this government has an appalling track record on delivering vital infrastructure and have not produced a single solution in their seven-plus years in office.

“Labor has a strong team made up of MPs from all walks of life and from a diverse range of backgrounds and each of them brings unique skills to the shadow areas they have been allocated.

“They will remain strong voices for their communities and represent their constituents who are being left behind by the Gutwein Government.

“Labor is united in our determination to ensure no Tasmanians is left behind.

“This is the Labor team that will build a vision for Tasmania’s future and the Tasmanian community will be in no doubt about what this team stands for.”

New Labor Shadow Cabinet 39

Media release – Peter Gutwein, Premier, 17 June 2021

Bitter divisions on display in shadow cabinet

Less than 24 hours after pledging party unity, newly crowned Labor Leader David O’Byrne has done the hard Left’s bidding and started the payback.

It is clear from the shadow cabinet announced today that Member for Lyons Jen Butler has been made the Right faction’s sacrificial lamb for supporting Shane Broad.

Only months ago, Rebecca White appointed Jen Butler to no less than five shadow portfolios.*

The new Leader is not his own man – he is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the union powerbrokers and the faceless men and women of Labor’s Administrative Committee, and he is at their beck and call because he owes his job to them.

Labor is a party hopelessly divided and dominated by – in the words of the Member for Braddon, Dr Broad – “a hard left factional group of power brokers that I believe have delivered three election losses in a row.”

In stark contrast, the Tasmanian majority Liberal Government is getting on with the job of securing Tasmania’s future, providing the certainty and stability Tasmanians need.
