Remarkable Cave

The southern coastline of the Tasman Peninsula has been exposed to the ocean’s erosive powers for thousands of years. Strong south-westerly winds create waves that attack the coastline, eroding it and forming, among other things, caves.

One of these caves is Remarkable Cave, located twelve miles from Port Arthur. It is well-known for its picturesque, immersive experience.

The roof at the rear of the cave collapsed long ago due to erosion. The long cave tunnel that leads out to the sea remains. You can walk through the tunnel when the sea is at low tide.

The cave’s steps and viewing platform were recently upgraded to allow people to view the cave in all weather conditions.

Fun fact

Remarkable Cave’s opening is the shape of Tasmania!

My visit to Remarkable Cave

I visited Remarkable Cave for the first time on 27 December 2020. I found it incredibly beautiful.

The sea was at low tide, but I chose not to walk through the cave tunnel because it was seven o’clock in the morning and the water would have been freezing. I know – I’m wimp!
