Tas Spring 6th Warmest on Record
The Bureau of Meteorology reports that days and night where very much warmer than average across Tasmania this spring.
Average minimum temperatures were the warmest on record for spring across parts of the north-east. Seasonal rainfall was close to average for the east, below average for the west and very much below average (driest 10% of records) for parts of the south.
A dry end to spring
- Spring rainfall was 14.2% below average for the state overall.
- While November 2020 was the 9th-driest on record for Tasmania, some stations in the east had their wettest October on record; September totals were mostly average to below average.
- It was Tasmania’s highest spring rainfall since 2017.
- The state’s highest daily rainfall total this spring, 140.0 mm, was recorded at Gray (Dalmayne Rd) on 9 October when a low pressure system brought heavy rainfall and strong winds to the state’s north-east.
- Several sites had their highest spring daily rainfall on record in early October.
5th-warmest nights, equal 7th-warmest days
- Minimum temperatures were in the warmest 10% of records for most of Tasmania, and parts of the state’s north-east were warmest on record for spring.
- The mean minimum temperature for the state was 0.77 °C higher than average and the warmest since 2009.
- Maximum temperatures were warmer than average in parts of the east and north-west and in most other areas they were in the warmest 10% of records for spring.
- The mean maximum temperature for the state was 0.99 °C higher than average and the warmest since 2017.
- Tasmania’s mean temperature for the season (an average of the maximum and minimum temperatures) was 6th-warmest on record.
- Some sites had their highest spring temperature on record including Devonport Airport reaching 28.2 °C on 20 November.
- Launceston (Ti Tree Bend) had its coldest spring day on record only reaching 8.3 °C on 28 September.
- A couple of island sites had their warmest spring night on record on 11 November.
- Launceston (Ti Tree Bend) and Bicheno (Council Depot) had their equal highest spring mean daily minimum temperature on record.
- Devonport Airport had their equal highest spring mean temperature on record
- Year-to-date minimum temperatures are tracking in the warmest 10% of records for the north-east.
