Like all sporting clubs, New Horizons Tasmania has been busily preparing for a return to sport, embedding new protocols to ensure the health and safety of participants with disability.
“We’re conscious that traditional forms of instructional communication don’t always provide great cut-through with our membership, so we were looking for an engaging video to demonstrate COVID-safe strategies,” said Edwina Dick of New Horizons.
When the organisation couldn’t find what they were looking for, they simply grabbed an iPhone, gathered a group of volunteers and created a short video themselves.
“We’re very conscious that people with disability are a particularly vulnerable group when it comes to being affected by COVID-19,” said Dick.
“Our members, coaches and volunteers have really strong relationships and hugs are a common greeting here, so by making our own video, we could even address that issue before having people come back together.”
New Horizons are now collaborating with a group of inclusive sport providers to seek funding to produce a professional video to share the COVID-19 safety message to a wider group of Tasmanians with intellectual disability.
