Support for Legal Challenge to Japan’s Taiji Dolphin Hunts

Greens Healthy Oceans spokesperson, Senator Peter Whish-Wilson, has given support to Action for Dolphin’s legal challenge to the world’s largest dolphin hunts in Taiji, Japan.

Senator Whish-Wilson said, “This legal challenge will focus the entire international community’s attention on the cruel and inhumane mass slaughter of dolphins that happens too often in Taiji.

“Most countries have protections in place for cetaceans which includes whales, dolphins and porpoises. But just as we watched Japan hide behind scientific research to slaughter whales, we now watch Japan hide behind domestic legislation to justify the mass slaughter of dolphins.

“Our oceans are broken from overfishing, plastic pollution and climate change. Senseless mass killings of wild marine mammals will only escalate the dire situation that our oceans currently face.

“Japan will be the centre of attention during the 2020 Olympics and the international community should use that attention to make it clear to Japan that this action is not tolerated internationally and their laws need to change.”

These mammals are intelligent, and they should not be killed!
