Restricting access to wilderness areas risk lives

SFFP Tas are demanding immediate action by the Tasmanian Govt to enable effective wildfire control in world heritage and conservation areas.  The recent Great Pine Tier Fire starting on Jan 15 lighting strike was in an area which could have been contained to an approximately 50-hectare area with the use of earth moving equipment and water assets combined.

Local fire authorities had requested these as fire control measures to prevent this fire spreading as predicted weather conditions were dangerous and would enable this fire to be possibly uncontrollable.

This request was refused as the fire site was within WHA and no affirmative action was taken.  This fire was then allowed to burn unrestricted, for some days until it burnt out from the WHA boundaries and onto adjoining properties.

This fire became uncontrollable and threatened hundreds of shacks & homes, farms, infrastructure, closed roads, construction of the wind farm, closed local business down….  and risking lives,  also it destroyed the fragile landscape of the Central Plateau scorching the earth for many years to come killing untold number of native animals such as quolls, wallabies, endangered devils and wedgetail eagle nests.
Many other species of bird life was severely impacted as it is the nesting time for many species and without question will have severe impact for years to come.

This fire has currently scorched 55,000 hectare of a unique fragile environment which is supposed to be protected for generations to come.  This disaster highlights the stupidity of policies of the so called environmentalists who lack the basic understanding of long term land management…..no cushion plant is worth a human life.
