Little Penguin Advisory Group welcomed

Greens Senator for Tasmania, Peter Whish-Wilson, has welcomed plans for a long-overdue Penguin Advisory Group after the death of over 100 Little Penguins across Tasmania.

Senator Whish-Wilson has long pushed for a Penguin Protection Taskforce in Tasmania, holding a forum in Penguin last year and writing to Premier Hodgman urging the State Government to establish a taskforce and fund important research and assessment.

“Little Penguins are facing a real threat of extinction in Tasmania and with five gruesome attacks in recent months, this taskforce is well overdue.

“These Little Penguins are part of our lives on the coast in Tasmania. We are in their environment, and we have a duty to respect that.

“The Greens are looking forward to continuing to work cooperatively with state and local governments and communities around the state.”

A federal Senate inquiry is coming to Hobart on Monday to discuss Tasmania’s threatened species and Senator Whish-Wilson will be raising the threats that Tasmania’s Little Penguins currently face.
