The proponents of Light Rail in Hobart will be seeking further details on whether today’s
City Deal announcement is a tangible step forward for rail services between Glenorchy
and Hobart.
It’s reported that 25 million dollars has been set aside to pave the way for the
development of the disused northern corridor – for future transport and housing.
The Rail Action Group says it’s disappointed, based on media reports, funds have not
specifically been set aside to recommence much needed rail services – but the group is
hopeful ‘congestion funding’ is keeping the project ‘on the rails’.
The group’s President Michael Hangan says “It seems to be a ‘down payment’ to
‘activate’ the corridor, but we’re unsure what form that may take or what the timetable
might be – under this announcement”.
Mr Hangan says he’s confident any assessment of the future needs for housing and
commercial development along the corridor will fully back the recommencement of Light
Rail services.
“The rails are there and ready to go – rail is by far the smartest and most efficient use of
the corridor” Mr Hangan says. “What we don’t want to see is more delay and years of
endless studies.”
“What investors need to get development going along the corridor is a concrete
commitment to Light Rail” Mr Hangan says.
The group says it’s disappointed that new Bridgewater Bridge design appears to lack any
provision for a rail line to cross the Derwent River into the southern midlands.
