Summer on hold as rain hits the state

  • Rain in the northern half of Tasmania today and possible storms in the north west, as a trough lingers over the state and a low intensifies over Victoria.
  • Totals of around 20 mm forecast for King Island, 5–15 mm for the north east and north west, and less than 2 mm elsewhere.
  • On Friday an additional 10–20 mm will fall in the Bass Strait Islands, 5–10 mm on the east coast, and less than 5 mm along the north coast.
  • Rain will continue over the weekend with the highest totals expected on Saturday. Current two-day totals (Saturday to Sunday midnight) are:
  • Average of 30–50 mm in the north west (Devonport to Wynyard), and localised heavier falls of 50–100 mm
  • 100–150 mm in the north east – Saturday up to 100 mm, Sunday the additional 50 mm.
  • Saturday will also see gusty conditions across the north east and north coast, wind gusts may reach 70–80 km/h during the day.
  • Thunderstorms are possible in the north and east on Saturday, and statewide on Sunday. Heavier rainfall totals are possible with storms.
  • Flooding may develop over the weekend mainly about the north. Minor to moderate flooding is possible in multiple catchments with the highest risk in the north east of the state.
  • Heavy rain may also lead to localised flash flooding over the weekend.
