Shame on the Tasmanian Senators for unanimously supporting the Government’s changes to the GST.
This is bad policy which is why I voted against it in the House of Representatives in October. It’s a great disappointment that not a single member of the Liberal or Labor Party joined me then.
There are numerous problems with the GST changes. For instance the certainty that no state will be worse off is only for eight years. There is no guarantee of Tasmania’s GST allocation growing as gross national GST receipts increase, in other words as the pie gets bigger. And there is no guarantee that special purpose payments won’t be cut.
So much for the Senate being the states’ house.
