‘In the small Deviot Community Hall, thousands of dollars were raised for the refugees and their families’

In a town in Northern Tasmania, in the small Deviot Community Hall, thousands of dollars were raised for the refugees and their families.

IMAGINE … if this were repeated in every hall in our country

IMAGINE  … if stories of if empathy shown for those who are fleeing their home country because of war or being persecuted for their political, religious beliefs, their gender, skin colour … and then would appear on the front pages of our newspapers

IMAGINE … … …

It has been said: The Only Thing Necessary for the Triumph of Evil is that Good people Do Nothing.

Bruce, Patrick and I have been totally overwhelmed by the warm support and the generosity of so many, what a wonderful, caring community we live in! Three months ago we decided to organise an auction and raise money for the refugees on Nauru and Manus Island. Word travelled through the grapevine all around our apple Isle and donations were posted from as far South as Hobart, East from St Marys and the river people of the Tamar Valley delivered donations by our back door.Renowned Tasmanian artists, students, friends and the many people all with their hearts in the right place.

One hour before the Auction the ‘live online’ auction was closed and 66 lots were called by the auctioneer extraordinaire His Lordship Kerry Finch M.L.C. who wooed the crowd, many of them who would gather once a month at the sailing club up the road.… it was an amazing night!

$11,500 was raised for The Asylum Seeker Resource Centre.

Thank you to the people with their wonderful donations, thank you to the punters and my friends who helped us to set up the auction and made it into such a fantastic night.

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you from Bruce Crerar, Patrick Senior and Mieke Senior-Loncin. ❤️

Pride and honour to the people of the West Tamar community and their supporters from further afield!

Such grass roots support was happening all over Australia with Rural Australians for Refugees in the early 2000s.

Australian people and the embattled, imprisoned and wearied asylum seekers are STILL waiting for a Government that can respond.
