• Government must meet with Nyrstar over proposed job cuts
• The loss of 12 jobs would put immense pressure on an already strained workforce
• Concerns job losses would increase the risk of serious injury
The Government must take urgent action to prevent the loss of 12 contractors at Nyrstar zinc works in Hobart and ensure the safety of the workers.
Shadow Minister for Employment, Training and Skills Development, Anita Dow, said the loss of 12 jobs would put immense pressure on an already strained workforce.
“We have heard that workers at Nyrstar are already under extreme pressure and removing 12 contractors from the mix would only put further strain on those left to pick up the load,” Ms Dow said.
“We are talking about a hazardous workplace where employees could potentially be exposed to high voltage electricity and acid.
“The Premier was clearly unaware of the potential job losses when asked yesterday.
“Labor calls on the Premier to urgently meet with the company to get assurances about the security of all jobs at the plant and the safety of the workforce.”
