The Independent Member for Denison, Andrew Wilkie, will introduce a bill to Parliament this morning that would temporarily bring children and their families on Nauru to Australia for medical treatment. The bill is co-sponsored by Adam Bandt and Rebekha Sharkie.

WHEN: Approximately 10:25am TODAY 22 October

WHERE: House of Representatives (watch live at https://www.aph.gov.au/News_and_Events/Watch_Parliament)

“Now is our chance,” Mr Wilkie said. “There are about 70 children languishing on Nauru, many in desperate need of medical treatment, and this bill will allow them to get the medical treatment they need. I just want to see these children treated before someone dies.”

“I want to see everyone – children and adults – freed from Manus and Nauru permanently. But I’ve put up legislation before to do that, and neither Labor nor Liberal have supported it.

“I call on all Members to support this bill. This will not dismantle offshore processing. It will not start the boats again. It is a one-off measure to bring the children currently on Nauru and their families to Australia temporarily so they can get medical and psychiatric treatment.”
