A bill that would give the territories authority to make legislation on euthanasia has been narrowly defeated after protracted debate in federal parliament.
The bill was defeated 36 votes to 34 on Wednesday after several Coalition senators were persuaded to recant their support. Speaking against the bill, Labor senator Pat Dodson said that legalised assisted suicide in the Northern Territory would leave Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people “even more vulnerable, when our focus should be on working collectively to create laws that help prolong life and restore their right to enjoy a healthy life”.
