Prime minister Malcolm Turnbull has announced immediate federal relief payments for farmers struggling with drought.
The $190 million package would provide one-off payments of up to $12,000 to farming households, as well as extra funding for rural and regional mental health services. Speaking in the western NSW town of Trangie on Sunday, Turnbull said “we need to remove the stigma and taboo in talking about mental health”, particularly in farming communities.
