• A Severe Weather Warning for damaging northwesterly winds is current.. Damaging northwesterly winds, averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts in excess of 100km/h are possible over much of Tasmania from late this morning and are expected to peak during the afternoon.
• A Severe Weather Warning for abnormally high tides in the south of the state is current, coinciding with a king tide this evening (between 6 pm and 7 pm). Sea levels are expected to exceed the highest astronomical tide of the year by 30 to 40cm with the evening high tide.
• A significant cold front will cross Tasmania Friday afternoon and evening, bringing showers and strong winds.
• Today’s state policy: Light morning showers about the north. Showers developing about the west around the middle of the day, extending statewide by late evening, although lighter in the southeast. Fresh to strong and gusty north to northwesterly winds, easing in the evening.
• Strong and gusty northwesterly winds are developing this morning and are expected to shift westerly and ease late this evening behind the front. At 0830am local time, the top three observed wind gusts are (in km/h):
– 107 at Mt Wellington (kunanyi) (at 0730)
– 102 at Scott’s Peak (at 0830)
– 106 at Mt Read (at 0748)
• A cold, unstable westerly flow will develop behind the front then persist throughout Saturday. Statewide showers are expected to ease throughout the day, and there is a chance of thunderstorm activity over much of the state.
• Snow levels are expected to lower to around 500 metres in the southwest late on Saturday, but retreat above 1000 metres around midday Sunday.
• Winds ease Saturday and begin to freshen again on Sunday and Monday as the next front approaches, due to cross Tuesday.
• Rainfall will consistently fall into the west of the state and parts of the north from Saturday onwards.
• Heavily saturated ground will heighten the risk of trees falling during or soon after windy conditions.
