United States president Donald Trump has cancelled a meeting with North Korean supreme leader Kim Jong Un, derailing an ambitious attempt to improve diplomatic ties between the two nations.

In a letter to Kim, Trump said “based on the tremendous anger and open hostility displayed in your most recent statement, I feel it is inappropriate, at this time, to have this long-planned meeting”.
