Islamic State has claimed responsibility for a suicide bombing in Kabul at the weekend that killed 57 people and left 119 injured.

The attack targeted Shia Hazara civilians queuing outside a voter registration centre to receive identification cards in preparation for parliamentary elections in October. Islamic State-Khorasan Province has sought to increase its footprint in Afghanistan as Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant has lost territory, calling on sympathisers to travel to areas of northeast Afghanistan it controls
