Come and hear what the whole world has been raving about!

Mandolin superstar Avi Avital, comes to Burnie for one performance only with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, performing works that have made him famous, including transcriptions for mandolin of concertos by Bach and Vivaldi. Also on the program are works by Purcell, Dell’Abaco and Locke. The most mesmerising harpsichordist in the business, Erin Helyard, directs from the keyboard.

Avi Avital is the first mandolinist to have received a Grammy nomination (for his performance of Avner Dorman’s Mandolin Concerto). He has inspired over 90 contemporary compositions and is acclaimed for his inspired re-imaginings of music for other instruments. Other recent recordings include Avital meets Avital (2017) with oud/bassist Omer Avital and his own Bach transcriptions. Avi Avital has performed at venues such as Carnegie Hall, Berlin Philharmonie, and Forbidden City Concert Hall.

He has appeared with the Berlin Symphony, Orchestre National de Montpellier and Israel Philharmonic, among others.

Erin Helyard has been acclaimed as an inspiring conductor, a virtuosic and expressive performer of the harpsichord and fortepiano, and a lucid scholar who is passionate about promoting discourse between musicology and performance. Erin graduated in harpsichord performance from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music with first-class honours and the University Medal. As Artistic Director and co-founder of the celebrated Pinchgut Opera and the Orchestra of the Antipodes (Sydney) he has forged new standards of excellence in historically-informed performance. In 2017 he won a Helpmann Award for Best Musical Direction for Handel’s Saul at the Adelaide Festival in a fêted revival of a Glyndebourne production directed by Barrie Kosky.
