Federal Member for Bass, Ross Hart MP is concerned to learn of proposed job cuts at Scottsdale’s Defence Science and Technology Group this week.
Mr Hart said “it hasn’t even been two weeks since we heard the Liberals talking about bringing more public sector staff to Tasmania, now we hear that there are potential cuts for regional Tasmania in the pipeline.
“I agree with Dorset Mayor Howard on this, in a small community like Scottsdale, every single job is valuable.
“The Shadow Minster for Defence, Richard Marles MP and I are contacting the Minister to express our concern that the investment in the Scottsdale DSTG Laboratory is not only maintained, but continues to form the basis of increased research, development and importantly production capacity for the ADF.
Shadow Minister Richard Marles has recently called for a coordinated approach between broader industry and Defence towards building future capabilities, ensuring that Defence develops strong links with our civil science and research sectors and relevant education institutions. In a practical sense the DSTG can and should form the nucleus for the development of greater food technology investment in Tasmania.
“When it comes to Defence spending the Turnbull Government is once again leaving Tasmania off the map.
