The Urban Group of Amnesty International Australia (AIA)
stands with women globally on International Women’s Day (IWD) 2018
IWD is a global day to celebrate achievements of women past, present and future.
AIA-Tas Urban Group and supporters of International Women’s Development Agency (IWDA) are inviting people to an event in celebration of IWD by addressing the women’s rights globally.
AIA campaigns for the rights of women and with the #TimesUp and #Me Too campaigns leading to a turning point in history to stop violence & abuse of women, IWD is more important than ever as a symbol of people standing together to demand gender equality.
AIA is urging Twitter to make it safer for women online presenting signed cards to the Twitter Aus. CEO on 21st March to this effect.
IWDA, an Aid agency, focussed on women’s rights & gender equality in the Asia Pacific have as their theme this year #Our Moment, which highlights this turning point. Women’s Rights organisations lead change but in Asia Pacific region they are not receiving the funding needed to address inequality. In 2016 a minuscule 1.22% of Australia’s aid budget went to supporting women’s rights organisations. At this rate it will be centuries before gender equality is achieved.
A petition to Australia’s Foreign Minister urging more funding will be available for signing & will be presented to the UN later this month.
