Community members in the Northern Territory town of Tennant Creek gathered to demand political action and accountability yesterday after a two-year-old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted on Tuesday.

Acting chief minister Nicole Manison and police commissioner Reece Kershaw flew into Tennant Creek yesterday for the meeting, at which family members revealed that the agency responsible for child protection, Territory Families, had received multiple notifications about the child in recent months but had failed to act. A 24-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the alleged assault, which resulted in the girl being airlifted to hospital in Adelaide and placed in an induced coma.
