Deputy prime minister Barnaby Joyce will take personal leave next week, paving the way for finance minister Mathias Cormann to serve as acting prime minister while Malcolm Turnbull is overseas.

In a statement, Joyce said he “wanted to support his family and partner after such intense public focus on personal matters”. The announcement came after the Senate passed a motion urging Joyce to resign for breaching ministerial standards, or for the National Party to sack him as leader. Turnbull announced a new ban on ministers having sex with employees, saying that Joyce should “reflect” and that he would update the ministerial code of conduct to promote a culture of “workplaces where women are respected”.
