The Tasmanian Farmers and Graziers Association (TFGA) today urged the Government, Biosecurity Tasmania and the community not to be distracted by the incursion of fruit fly infected fruit from Victoria.

TFGA CEO Peter Skillern said that the task at hand was the eradication of fruit fly in Tasmania, not the apportioning of blame to other States

“Fruit fly infected fruit from Victoria has been located, but this does not mean that it is the origin of the Tasmanian incursions or the only origin,” Mr Skillern said.

“Either way, this issue points to the critical need for Tasmania to invest heavily in our own biosecurity, a position that the TFGA has been advocating strongly for a number of years.

“Whether it be fruit fly, blueberry rust, or some other threat, Tasmania clearly must rely on its own resources to ensure the security and the sustainability of the Tasmanian agricultural sector.”
