The Tasmanian Farmers and Graziers Association (TFGA) today welcomed the announcement by the State Government that they will deliver two new purpose-built Spirit of Tasmania vessels in 2021.
TFGA CEO Peter Skillern said that the announcement that freight capacity will increase by 39 per cent augured well for the agricultural industry and the record expansion that is currently taking place in the sector.
“Freight capacity is integral to the State’s economy and employment. As an island state we are reliant upon north and southbound sailings to underpin our economic prosperity,’’ Mr Skillern said.
“This announcement clearly supports the Tasmanian agricultural sector and economic growth into the future. The TFGA will be discussing with the Government proposed mechanisms to cover the interim period between 2018, and when the new ships come online in 2021.”
