Eight people have been killed in New York City after a man drove a rented utility down a bike path.

New York governor Andrew Cuomo said investigators found a note inside the vehicle mentioning the Islamic State terrorist organisation, and 29-year-old Uzbek migrant Sayfullo Saipov has been named as the driver. Counterterrorism authorities said Saipov was known to them, while past acquaintances told the New York Times he had “monsters inside”. Taking to Twitter, President Donald Trump blamed the attack on what he called “Democrat Lottery Systems” of immigration.
