Tasmanian Unions joined members of the LGBTQI community, their families and allies in Hobart this morning as Australia returned a strong ‘yes’ vote in support of marriage equality.

Over 63% of Tasmanians have voted in favour of equality, surpassing the national average.

“Tasmanian unions were never going to stand idly by while our LGBTQI friends and co-workers were denied the right to marry the person they love. We were proud to work closely with equality campaigners from all sections of the community, knocking on doors, making phone calls and holding rallies in support of fairness, equality and love,” said Jessica Munday, Secretary of Unions Tasmania.

“Equality is union business. We believe in fairness. We stand up to bullying and harassment in our workplaces and our communities. Our society suffers when equality isn’t afforded to everyone,” said Jessica Munday, Secretary of Unions Tasmania.

“We now call on the Government to waste no more time or money denying LGBTQI members the same rights as everyone else and make marriage equality law,” said Ms Munday.
