The Government thanks the Council for their support of this bill in its amended form.
We have negotiated with the Council in good faith and it is pleasing we have been able to make amendments that may, in due course, see the removal of suspended sentences for serious offences while also addressing the concerns of some members about the existing evidence base.
It is unfortunate that despite publicly stating otherwise, Labor has not offered compromise or moderated their position in any way.
We look forward to continuing this cooperative approach with the Council in the final weeks of the Parliamentary year.

Elise Archer, Minister for Justice
