Sam Anning, left, Tom Vincent and Alf Jackson
Hobart-based Tom Vincent is a risk-taker; an extroverted, dynamic and explosive performer who relishes interplay with the quintessential sidemen of his Trio: Sam Anning on double bass and Alf Jackson on drums.
The Tom Vincent Trio is ingeniously swinging; playful, lulling, confronting, witty; deliciously combining extremes of simplicity and complexity, the conservative and radical. Many place Tom as the most captivating and inventive jazz pianist on the Australian scene, even ranking with the greats worldwide.
Tom has spent thirty years refining and distilling his nuanced art of unlimited variety and exploration. Liberal use of jazz standards is the meeting ground that forms the Trio’s performance of swinging yet unexpected renditions, every single time they play. There is nothing pre-planned and every performance is volatile, risky and fun, and always swingin’.
Tom has relentless dedication to naturalness and excellence in his music; enter double bassist, Sam Anning who has recently reunited with Tom Vincent Trio.
Sam is in high demand and considered the best jazz bass player in Australia. He won the 2015 Wangarratta Jazz Award for bass that year. Sam was living in New York City, performing in USA and touring the world and has recently moved back to Melbourne, a city Sam actually considers to have a better music scene than NYC.
Sam started performing with Tom Vincent ten years ago at various Jazz Festivals and gigs around Australia. Together they have recorded for ABC Television and Sam is on Tom’s 4th CD release, Jazz Lives!
Tom and Sam have an incredible chemistry together, which is magnified and enhanced by the Trio’s now long-term drummer Alf Jackson. This ensemble is a brotherhood of jazz talent. This incarnation of the Tom Vincent Trio is the best it has ever sounded. Their understanding of each other’s playing styles and downright enjoyment of playing together forms an extraordinary output that comes from complete mutual respect and admiration. Audiences have been enthralled by their performances that are laced with the unexpected, fun and lots of swinging. It is indeed one of the best, live jazz experiences on offer at the moment.
The Tom Vincent Trio is touring eastern states of Australia this December. They will be performing at eight venues in both regional and metro areas.
If you want to catch the Tom Vincent Trio live, get along to one of the gigs. The tour launches in Tasmania Friday 1st December at Epsom House (Hobart) and then on to Launceston, Ulverstone, Melbourne, Ballarat, Castlemaine, Canberra and Sydney.
