State and territory leaders are in “violent agreement” over the need for new anti-terror laws proposed by the federal government, according to New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian.
Premiers and first ministers across the board agreed to the Turnbull government’s proposed laws at the Council of Australian Governments meeting in Canberra yesterday, which would lead to the compilation of a national facial recognition database using photos from drivers’ licences and allow police to hold terror suspects for up to 14 days without charge. Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said her state would be willing to let authorities scan the faces of crowds at the upcoming Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.
