The federal government will release its new energy policy today after a party room debate this morning, where the Coalition will abandon the Clean Energy Target proposed by the Finkel review.

While key crossbenchers such as Jacqui Lambie and Nick Xenophon have already expressed reluctance at supporting an energy package without a clean energy target, the government maintains it can meet its Paris climate agreement obligations and ensure reliable power without one. The last-minute wrangling comes as an Australian Competition and Consumer Commission report finds that household electricity prices have risen by 63 per cent over the last decade.
