 Liberals’ political protest laws struck down by the High Court
 Hodgman Government caught out playing politics with legislation

The decision by the High Court to strike down the Liberal Government’s political protest laws is deeply embarrassing for Will Hodgman.

Shadow Attorney-General Lara Giddings said the Liberals’ hollow political rhetoric has been exposed on the national stage.

“What an embarrassing day in the life of the Liberal Government,” Ms Giddings said.

“For the High Court to strike down the Hodgman Government’s legislation puts Tasmania in the national spotlight for all the wrong reasons.

“The Liberals’ political crusade to beat their chest when it comes to protestors has been a colossal waste of time and money.”

Labor warned the Liberals their policy was doomed.

In May last year* as the legislation was coming undone, Ms Giddings said:

“It shows one line slogans don’t make for good public policy.

“Tasmania’s existing trespass laws are adequate and the Government should now admit it got it badly wrong.”

“The High Court decision has confirmed Labor’s concerns and vindicated our warnings,” Ms Giddings said.

“This was all about politics for the Liberal Government and they’ve been found out in the High Court.”
