Labor has committed to reinstatement of local management abandoned by Liberals
Circular Head Mayor and other key leaders back plan
Local management committee part of Labor’s $3 million commitment
The Hodgman Liberal Government needs to finally reveal whether or not it intends to reinstate local management in future decisions about the Arthur Pieman Conservation Area.
Braddon MP Shane Broad said Labor had committed to include all key stakeholders on the committee to oversee the new cultural management plan for the area – a moved backed today by Circular Head Mayor Daryl Quilliam and other key local leaders including the Circular Head Aboriginal Corporation and the Circular Head Progress Group.
Dr Broad said Labor had last month announced a future Federal Labor Government would provide $2.29 million for the development a management plan, new indigenous rangers and improved tourism infrastructure and State Labor would commit $600,000, including the costs to reinstate the local management committee.
“The reinstatement of the committee is of critical importance to the local community which has been left out in the cold by the Hodgman Government which has kept it in recess for the past three years,” Dr Broad said.
“The local community has been abandoned by this government which refuses to consult with important stakeholders on the far north west and west coasts who deserve and want input.
“Now that today we have important local people like Mayor Quilliam and the CHAC along with the Circular Head Progress Group asking the government to re-establish the committee, the government needs to start answering questions.
“Will the Liberals listen to locals? Will they agree to allow local input about important decisions around the Arthur Pieman area? Will they make a commitment and guarantee this committee into the future?
“Locals are looking for inclusion, not the exclusion they have been subject to under the Liberal Government.”
