Up to 20 year 11 and 12 students have the chance to get a free taste of the exciting careers on offer to agricultural science graduates as part of the 2017 Feed your Mind, Feed the World camp.
Applications are now open for the camp, which is being run in December by the University of Tasmania.
Agriculture Student Outreach Coordinator, Dr Joanna Jones said the program had been specially designed for Year 11 and 12 students to learn about the diverse career opportunities available to agricultural science graduates.
“Now is the perfect time to begin, or advance, your career in agriculture in Tasmania. Many young people envisage careers in agriculture being based around traditional farming enterprises like shearing sheep, milking cows or growing crops, which it can be, but it is also so much more. There is far more to 21st century agriculture than meets the eye,” Dr Jones said.
“Each day of the camp we will visit a selection of agriculture industries, many of whom are national and international leaders in their field and are employing agricultural graduates.
“This will include visits to intensive hydroponic systems, a robotic dairy, floriculture enterprises, berry growers, dairy processors, large-scale agronomic businesses, and vegetable producers and processors.”
“It is a fantastic opportunity for students to see first-hand how diverse the agriculture industry is, and as a result, we see a high number of the camp participants enrolling to study agriculture at the University of Tasmania.”
Current Bachelor of Agricultural Science student, Caitlyn Munnings from Campania said going on the camp when she was in year 12 helped confirm her decision to study agriculture.
“The camp was a great experience and really highlighted for me how many opportunities there are in the state for agricultural graduates,” Caitlyn said.
“Hearing industry people talk about how valuable Ag Science graduates are, and the high number of jobs available when you graduate, definitely made me confident that I was making the right choice.”
“It was a good opportunity to see science being applied in the real world, and to ask questions about the degrees the University of Tasmania offered in agriculture at the same time. I highly recommend the trip for any college students who are considering careers in agriculture, science, business and the environment. It is free and really great fun.”
The camp runs for three days from 11-13 December 2017 and is open to Year 11 and 12 students who have an interest in agricultural, biological, chemical, and environmental science.
