Southern Tasmania’s brand new state of the art martial arts facility will open its doors this weekend
as over 100 martial arts students and coaches from around the state are expected to gather and hit
the mats to celebrate it opening.

The Adam Newton Sorell Martial Arts Academy Grand Opening event will be held this Saturday, 7
October with the club officially being opened by the Hon. Rebecca White MP and Mayor of Sorell
Kerry Vincent.

The exciting venture, led by Tasmania’s first Brazilian Jiu-jitsu black belt Adam Newton, will
showcase family fun and provide a taste of martial arts for curious bodies and minds.

“We’re offering first class facilities and instruction for the first time to rapidly growing Sorell
Municipality,” Adam said.

“We will work with people to achieve their individual martial arts goals, whether that be to gain
some skills, increase in confidence, gain a black belt or even compete on the world stage.”

Adam said the rise in popularity for martial arts was largely due to the UFC, however it is important
to understand what it takes to become a good martial artist.

“People from all walks of life attend and participate in martial arts for many different reasons. It can
be very challenging, takes discipline and hard work, but there are so many benefits to reap,” he
said.

“The friendship and camaraderie that adults and children gain, the many mental and physical
health benefits, as well as learning potentially lifesaving skills at the same time.

“We’re offering small groups classes and private lessons in various martial arts, self-defence and
fitness/conditioning for children, teens and adults.”

The day will get serious for three of Adam’s students.

“I have two men grading one to brown belt and one to purple belt and one female student grading
to blue belt – It can take approximately 15 years to reach Black Belt, so these grading are no mean
feat,” he said.

“They will have to grapple for two and a half hours nonstop to achieve their new belt, so there will
be some fantastic jujitsu on display.”

Adam Newton has been a martial artist for 38 years. With 20 years in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Adam
gained his Black Belt in 2009.

Sorell Martial Arts Academy is the South Easts first commercial academy and currently already
reaches communities from Orford, down to the Tasmanian Peninsula.

Sorell Martial Arts Academy is affiliated with the Maromba Academy Australia under the Head
Coach Thiago Stefanutti a 3rd degree Black Belt from Brazil.
