Long-time marriage equality advocate and spokesperson for Tasmanians United for Marriage Equality, Rodney Croome, expressed disappointment and resolve at today’s decision by the High Court.
“We are disappointed that this unnecessary, expensive and divisive postal vote has been upheld by the High Court,” said Mr Croome
“There are many in the LGBTI community who will be feeling anxious about the prospect of a deeply personal campaign.
“But it’s time to rally and to dedicate all of the resources at our disposal to ensure the majority of Australians vote “yes” for marriage equality.”
Mr Croome said there would be a Tasmanian campaign to complement national efforts, telling the stories of everyday people from across the State.
“We will be out on foot, on phone, online and on air to mobilise young people and connect with undecided voters.
“We want to show the nation that Tasmanians support the values of fairness and equality.
“This will be a tough fight. There is no doubt that a postal vote favours the “no” case. But the LGBTI community is stronger than we have ever been and we have the majority of Tasmanians and Australians in our corner.
“I urge Tasmanians to show their support for marriage equality at events this Saturday September 9th.”
The Hobart Marriage Equality Rally will be held on Parliament lawns in Salamanca at midday. In Launceston, the Equality Walk starts from Princes Square at 10.45am.
Tasmanians United for Marriage Equality is an overarching body working with organisations across the State to campaign for marriage equality.
