The School of Life Australia has today announced that it will run a special weekend pop-up in Hobart from Friday 6 October till Sunday 8 October 2017.

The pop-up will take place at 126 Bathurst Street, Hobart (the future site of the carbon positive, sustainable apartment development The Commons) with four events scheduled over the weekend. Tickets for all four events will be free, distributed through a ballot system.

To win a ticket, interested customers should go to www.theschooloflife.com/hobart and enter individual event ballots from today, Friday 8 September until Monday 2 October. Successful entrants will be notified on Tuesday 3 October.

“Hobart is a place steeped in culture and curiosity; it is a perfect location to have emotionally intelligent conversations and therefore an ideal location for The School of Life to host a pop-up program,” says John Armstrong, Hobart resident and Philosopher-in-Chief at The School of Life Australia.

The four events on The School of Life Hobart’s pop-up calendar are:

Special Event | A Night of Better Conversation: Sex
6:30pm – 9:00pm, Friday 6 October

It’s hard to imagine a topic considered more taboo by great swathes of society than sex. Although we live in an era which might, arguably, be considered more “sex positive” than ever, it remains a subject we approach with trepidation. In fact, some would argue that living in a liberated age, in which we’re all supposed to be fantastically well-adjusted about sex, just makes things harder. So how can we best approach this touchy topic? A Night of Better Conversation events are a chance to engage with minds moulded by forces different to our own, and to go beyond our comfort zone by taking risks with what we are willing to share.

Class | How to Realise Your Potential
10:00am – 1:00pm, Saturday 7 October

We are, most of us, aware that not all of our potential is being mined. We have intuitions of possibilities – in our love lives, our careers and our ways of living – that we are yet to explore. This class looks into what potential really is: where and when our intuitions are correct, and where perhaps we should exercise greater caution in following sudden ideas.

Special Event | A Night of Better Conversation: Death
6:30pm – 9:00pm, Saturday 7 October

Cicero said that to philosophise is to learn to die. The imminence of death forces one to think radically differently about the value of life. The idea is that contemplation of death can lead to liberation. It confronts a fear that lurks in every soul, and by staring it in the face, potentially undoes it. So how might we approach a subject as difficult as death? A Night of Better Conversation events are designed to help us enjoy rich and memorable discussions about things that really matter in life, inspired by the ideas of great thinkers and philosophers.

Class | How to Be Creative
10:00am – 1:00pm, Sunday 8 October

Einstein said that we’re all born geniuses – gently suggesting that a lot of us must therefore have been educated in mediocrity. This class employs a range of experiments to help us gain practical access to our latent creative selves. We discover how to boost a key ingredient of creativity: confidence. We explore why intuition, play and daydreaming are essential to innovation. We find out how blocks and boredom can, paradoxically, become creative triggers.
