Immigration minister Peter Dutton has hit out at the 52 refugees transferred to the United States as part of the US-Australia resettlement agreement, calling them “economic refugees” and claiming Australia has “been taken for a ride”.
Speaking to 2GB’s Ray Hadley, Dutton claimed “those up on Manus” have been “out enjoying themselves outside this centre, by the beach and all the rest of it”, saying “there is a very different scenario up on Nauru and Manus than people want you to believe”. Dutton’s comments contradict the wealth of evidence of physical and sexual abuse, mental anguish and medical neglect in the Nauru and Manus centres.
